The Chain of Rocks Bridge allowed the famous Route 66 to cross the Mississippi River near St. Louis. Now it is closed to automobile traffic and is a bike/walking path. This bridge has the distinction of being one of the Route 66 bridges crossing the Mississippi into St. Louis. Built in 1927 it was replaced in 1967 and turned into a walking/ bike trail. From the bridge you get a pretty spectacular view of the river and of downtown St. Louis.
I came across this mural in Pontiac, Illinois. Although Route 66 no longer exists, it is memorialized along it’s original route.
