Return from the Hunt

Hounds from Tree Creek Bassets kennel return form the hunt. With the hunters, we have 3 Couples (six Basset Hounds), Annie the Coonhound and bringing up the rear is Brian-Scott a one year old Basset Hound not quite ready to be a tracker. The other six hounds have spent about two hours scouring fields, wood […]

Out with her trusty hound

A lone woman with her trusty hound hiking through the woods. Actually she is part of the Gumbo Flats Gold Cup event where hounds show off their tracking skills. Today there are “12 couples” (24 Bassets) in field including Missouri’s Three Creek Basset Pack and Okaw Valley Foot Bassets from Ohio. Awards are given to […]

Hounds

My two hounds: Lolly and Dixie. They do not get to go hunting in the country but like to chase rabbits in the back yard. However the back yard fencing cuts the hunt short. They have discovered that other critters, like opossums, cannot make it to the fence. Unfortunately the opossums fight back but Dixie […]

Hunters

After foraging through the woods in Weldon Spring, this group pops out on a country road. These hunters have a pack of about a dozen Basset Hounds and are part of Three Creek Bassets, a nationally known pack of scent hounds. Today they are trying to pick up the scent of a rabbit, track it […]

The Hare and Hounds

You know it is fall when you experience opening day of Basseting. During the fall season through winter, about a dozen Basset Hounds are tested to see if they can find and follow the scent of a rabbit. Once the scent is found the Hounds go on full alert and try to find their elusive […]

The Discussion

Watching these hounds hunt is fascinating. Bassets are pack animals and work together to track their prey. When one finds a scent and heads into the brush, the others spread out knowing the target will run. The secondary hounds try to judge the direction of the prey and attempt to cut it off. During all […]

Fall Hunt

It’s the end of fall and time to take the hounds into the empty fields. The Three Creek Basset pack will spendĀ  weekends from now until April honing their tracking skills. This is an opportunity to get out, enjoy the Fall weather and fresh air.

Basset Hounds

Many of our Sunday afternoons are spent in St. Charles County watching these hounds demonstrate their tracking skills. They are part of Three Creek Bassets, a professional pack of Basset Hounds that compete nationally. Their short powerful legs allow them to forage through dense brush where rabbits hide. Their goal is to track the rabbits […]
