Washington Island Stavkirke

The Washington Island Stavkirke was modeled after the Borgund Stavkirke constructed in 1150 near Laerdal, Sogn. That church was chosen since it is the best preserved and least altered example of this style of church architecture. The building has twelve 18-foot “stavs” or masts, all from Washington Island. Eleven are Pine and one is WhiteContinue reading “Washington Island Stavkirke”

Stylized Art of Cana Island Lighthouse in Door County

This is a closeup of the Cana Island Lighthouse. Near the northern tip of Door County, the light signifies the area between the straits into Green Bay or Baileys Harbor. The photo is stylized with software I have been experimenting with that gives it the look of a painting. The lighthouse is surrounded by LakeContinue reading “Stylized Art of Cana Island Lighthouse in Door County”

Gus Klenke’s Garage

During my first visit to Door County, I was driving through Ellison Bay on Highway 42 and had to pull off the road to photograph this place. An old, abandoned garage with a pickup truck in front suffering the same fate. Interestingly someone was keeping up a flower garden in the back of the truckContinue reading “Gus Klenke’s Garage”

It is known for its picturesque views, proximity to natural areas, and maritime history. The area was once aContinue reading “Jackson Harbor on Washington Island”

Light keeper’s Kitchen

The Cana Island Lighthouse keeper’s house contains a kitchen that was converted from a woodshed and includes a wood-fired stove and a hand-operated water pump. The original kitchen was converted into a dining room, while the room to the right remained the living room. Upstairs, the assistant keepers had their own kitchen, living room, and other rooms.   ClickContinue reading “Light keeper’s Kitchen”

Cave Point

Cave Point offers a spectacular view of Lake Michigan and the eastern shore of the Door Peninsula, including sunrise and evening moon rises.  A half-mile hiking trail stretches through the forest of birch, maple and beech trees and links up with several miles of trails in the adjacent Whitefish Dunes State Park, which borders theContinue reading “Cave Point”

Baileys Harbor Range Light

This is one my favorite lighthouses in Door County. It’s not your typical light, it is known as a Range Light. Range lights come in pairs and are used to guide ships into harbors or narrow channels. When a ship lines up the back light with the front light, they are in the channel. BelowContinue reading “Baileys Harbor Range Light”

Painted red, the light is situated on the north pier of the southern entrance to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.
