This is not a school house and not a lighthouse. It is what is known as a “range light.” There are two lights, one at each end of the walkway in the photo. The other light (not shown in this photo) is near Baileys Harbor and when ships lineup the two lights, they have found the safe route into the harbor.

A quiet morning on Lake Michigan. This bay is shallow so there is limited boat traffic and sitting on the dock watching the sunrise is a must for this area. Also this is a bay which keeps the waves down. This is a three shot HDR photo taken on a tripod. See my HDR tutorial for more information: https://greatriversimaging.com/hdr/
Just around the corner from the Moravia Street Cottage mentioned in the previous post is Ephraim’s iconic Wilson’s Restaurant in Door County. Famous for their ice cream, this is a great place to stop for lunch, desert or both! Then, down the road is Al Johnson’s Restaurant where they have live goats on the roof (be careful when you go in, you do not want to be hit by anything falling out of the sky!).
On the Lake Michigan side of Door County you will find Cave Point County Park. This is an area of low bluffs along the lake that have been hollowed out by the waves. There are lots of scenic overlooks so if you visit, be sure to bring your camera.
One of the keys to better photography is to go back multiple times. This is a scene I discovered in 2014 on my first visit to Door County, Wisconsin. This turns out to be a very popular view for photographers and artists to capture. There are always people in the area taking photos. My first visit was was on a sunny day, creating harsh shadows on the road. On this day, there was a light overcast which provided a bright day but mild shadows.
I used a telephoto lens to compress the road so the curves look closer than they really are. This is a 5 shot HDR photo used to give a natural look and better contrast. Editing in Photomatix and Lightroom gave the final version.

Wilson’s Ice Cream shop is an iconic business in the town of Ephraim, Wisconsin. It is interesting to photographers because of it’s bright colors, historic look and the angle it sits on the road. As you walk along the road, it takes on a different look. Be sure to see the photo in full screen.
While heading out for some sightseeing with a friend, I notice this beautiful yacht go by. I suggested we go out into some very rough water to photograph the sailboat and the friend agreed. This is the is the result taken from a very bouncy platform! (1/500 sec; 105mm; ISO 320; f9)
A shallow area on Lake Michigan allows these reeds to grow around this dock, giving a nice effect for this early morning shot. This is one of the many scenic areas in Door County, Wisconsin. A photographer should plan to spend several days to get a number of nice shots.
A trip to Door County required a visit to a new lighthouse. Eagle Bluff Light is on the the Green Bay side of Door County. These place can be difficult to photograph because of all of the visitors and tours. A little patience will pay off.
