Sunset on Lake Minocqua

The iconic boathouses of Lake Minocqua create the character of the area. The lake is well known for its sport fishing. Also, the lake surrounds the town of Minocqua making the boathouses a major source of activity. Photographing the boathouses is best done by boat but a lot of good scenes can be captured fromContinue reading “Sunset on Lake Minocqua”

Minocqua Trestle

One hot summer afternoon in 1954 I was bundled onto a waiting train in St. Louis’ iconic Union Station. By noon the next day I was crossing this trestle leading to Minoqua, Wisconsin’s station. This was the beginning of my love of this small town in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Minoqua is an Island City (town) surroundedContinue reading “Minocqua Trestle”

Bald Eagle

We are fortunate in the Midwest, particularly our Great Rivers area where the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers merge to have these beautiful birds living here. Unfortunately the best time to see them is during the very cold months of January and February. Another good place to spot these eagles is in the Wisconsin Northwoods.Continue reading “Bald Eagle”

Red Boathouse

Here is a small boathouse on Lake Tomahawk in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Lake Tomahawk is part of a chain of lakes in what is known as the Lakeland area. The lakes are connected by a series of channels that allow you to visit neighbors by boat or tie-up in Downtown Minocqua for some shopping. Click hereContinue reading “Red Boathouse”

The Thirsty Whale

This one of my favorite Minoqua, Wisconsin boathouse photos. This is not really a boathouse. It is the Thirsty Whale restaurant on the lake. It is a very old structure with some interesting neon lights that make it a great photographic subject.

Boathouse

This is one of my first photos using HDR. The photo was taken handheld on a walking trail along lake Kawaguesaga in Minocqua, Wisconsin. My wife and I regularly walk this trail with our Basset Hounds during the summers. The boathouses along the lakes add to the scenic nature of the area. The photo wasContinue reading “Boathouse”

Northwoods Sunrise

Take Highway 51 north out of Wausau, Wisconsin and farmland will turn to woods which will soon be surrounded by scenic lakes. Here you will be in the Great Northwoods of Wisconsin. This is a view from the Highway 51 bridge of a sunrise on Lake Minocqua. This bridge, crossing into the town of MinocquaContinue reading “Northwoods Sunrise”

Thirsty Whale on the lake

The Thirsty Whale is a lakeside bar & grill on Lake Minocqua in Wisconsin. Arrive by boat, car or on foot for a good burger and beer. This is an old commercial boathouse on the lake and is an interesting place to visit. I remember it from 50’s and 60’s as an old boat liveryContinue reading “Thirsty Whale on the lake”
