A nice way to start the season is to visit Missouri Botanical Garden’s Garden Glow. A walk through the park gives you scene after scene of the upcoming holiday. See the Climatron with its reflecting pools, walk through Henry Shaws home, see the beautifully decorated gatehouse and endless holiday lights. The grandkids love the trainContinue reading “Getting ready for Christmas at the Botanical Garden”

Fall colors at the Missouri Botanical Garden
While taking a Fall walk through the Missouri Botanical Garden, I found this area I had never seen before. These are the best fall colors in the area, in an unusual setting. These are possibly plum trees. Click on the photo to purchase. Click here to see more of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
Road to Northport
Just up the road from Gus Klenke’s Garage is the “windy road” or Highway 42 just before Northport. Northport is at the end of the Door County peninsula and where you catch the ferry to Washington Island. One story has it that the road was constructed to weave around utility poles that originally went straightContinue reading “Road to Northport”
Gus Klenke’s Garage
During my first visit to Door County, I was driving through Ellison Bay on Highway 42 and had to pull off the road to photograph this place. An old, abandoned garage with a pickup truck in front suffering the same fate. Interestingly someone was keeping up a flower garden in the back of the truckContinue reading “Gus Klenke’s Garage”
Cana Island Lighthouse: A Historic Landmark in Wisconsin
The Cana Island lighthouse is located just north of Baileys Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. Along with the Baileys Harbor Range Lights, the lighthouse was built to replace the Baileys Harbor Lighthouse in 1869 and was first lit in 1870. The lighthouse is built on an island that reaches out to Lake MichiganContinue reading “Cana Island Lighthouse: A Historic Landmark in Wisconsin”
Ha Ha Tonka Ruins
Wealthy Kansas City businessman Robert Snyder had a dream to construct a European-styled castle right in his beloved Missouri. To this end Snyder purchased 5,000 acres of land, including his very own lake, and began work on the evocative mansion in 1905. The businessman even imported stone masons from Europe to achieve the correct style,Continue reading “Ha Ha Tonka Ruins”
Fall Trip to Frederickson’s Bait Shop
This is one of my favorite places to photograph in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. The little shack was a little bait shop where the Frederickson sisters sold minnows and other bait to fishermen. Now it is a commerative museum remembering them. This is in the town of Star Lake just north of Sayner. Take Highway N northContinue reading “Fall Trip to Frederickson’s Bait Shop”
Minocqua Boathouses
It may have been the railroad that brought the first tourists to the island city of Minocqua in the early 1900s, but it’s the boats that keep them coming back. Whether it’s a fishing adventure, a run on the boards (water skis, In Northwoods parlance), or a sunset cruise with refreshments, visitors expect to getContinue reading “Minocqua Boathouses”
Stream Crossing
Dogwood Canyon Nature Park in Southwestern Missouri is one of the jewels of the state. They have about 4 miles of paths that follow this stream through a valley/canyon south all the way to Arkansas. On the way you will view spectacular scenery including never ending waterfalls. A few ways to experience the area isContinue reading “Stream Crossing”
Bald Eagle
We are fortunate in the Midwest, particularly our Great Rivers area where the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers merge to have these beautiful birds living here. Unfortunately the best time to see them is during the very cold months of January and February. Another good place to spot these eagles is in the Wisconsin Northwoods.Continue reading “Bald Eagle”
