Pilot Island with its lighthouse and living quarters is a dead island. Nothing grows there and no one lives there or is allowed to visit. The light is the light of Porte des Mortes or Death’s Door. It sits in a strait linking Lake Michigan and Green Bay between the northern tip of the DoorContinue reading “Pilot Island”

Road to Northport
Just up the road from Gus Klenke’s Garage is the “windy road” or Highway 42 just before Northport. Northport is at the end of the Door County peninsula and where you catch the ferry to Washington Island. One story has it that the road was constructed to weave around utility poles that originally went straightContinue reading “Road to Northport”
Gus Klenke’s Garage
During my first visit to Door County, I was driving through Ellison Bay on Highway 42 and had to pull off the road to photograph this place. An old, abandoned garage with a pickup truck in front suffering the same fate. Interestingly someone was keeping up a flower garden in the back of the truckContinue reading “Gus Klenke’s Garage”
Cormorants at Porte des Morts
“Cormorants at Death’s Door” refers to the abundance of Double-crested Cormorants between Door County and Washington Island, a location named for the dangerous waters around Pilot Island, Wisconsin, and for which the “Death’s Door Tour” is named. The phrase describes the presence of these birds in a place that is both geographically significant and ecologically important,Continue reading “Cormorants at Porte des Morts”
Shaking it off
The ducks and geese in Forest Park were vey active recently. Walking by one of the streams I noticed the ducks were busy diving for dinner. I knew that eventually they would want to dry off by flapping their wings so I waited and got this photo of a duck shaking off the water. InContinue reading “Shaking it off”
Shaker’s Staircase
This one of my favorite photos. The simplicity of the lines and the lighting from above highlight the skills of the builders. This elegant spiral staircase is one of two in the Trustee’s House (1839) built by the Shakers in Shaker Village of Pleasent Hill. The two staircases stand mirroring each other ascending three storiesContinue reading “Shaker’s Staircase”
Trustee’s Office & Guest House
Trustee’s Office and Guest House in Shaker Village of Pleasent Hill in Kentucky. Built in 1839-1841 by Micajah Burnett, housed the offices of the legal and financial leaders of the Shaker community at Pleasant Hill, and provided lodging to traveling Shakers. The front door opens to a wide central hall that is intersected midway throughContinue reading “Trustee’s Office & Guest House “
After the Storm
Tornado spawning storms from earlier in the day have now passed and things at Holy Family Church are now getting back to normal. Storms moved in and out of this area for several days while I was there making very surreal scenes. Watch here for some more very interesting photos. Click on the photo forContinue reading “After the Storm”
Confluence
Sunflowers at Columbia Bottoms Conservation Area. This is at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The Conservation Department is managing Columbia Bottom to create a mosaic of bottomland habitats that includes shallow wetlands, bottomland hardwoods, prairie, and cropland. These habitats attract a wide variety of resident and migratory wildlife for the enjoyment ofContinue reading “Confluence”
Bond Falls After the Storm
Bond Falls is in the western U.P. on Bond Falls Rd, east of Pauding MI. This is the most impressive waterfall in Michigan with the possible exception of Tahquamenon Falls. The main drop is 40 feet high and 100+ feet wide. Above the main falls are a series of cascades and rapids that must drop a totalContinue reading “Bond Falls After the Storm”
