In Wisconsin’s Northwoods you will find a large number of Eagles along the rivers and lakes. They like to take over dead trees along bodies of water so they can watch for fish. Once they find their prey they will screech, dive into the water and come up with a fish. These are what IContinue reading “Eagle Tree”

Sunrise on North Bay
Sunrises and sunsets in the northern latitudes are spectacular due to the earth’s tilt on its axis. Also in the morning there is less wind on the lakes giving them a nice reflecting surface. North Bay on Lake Michigan in Door County is a small bay which has less wind on it making it prettyContinue reading “Sunrise on North Bay”
Sunflowers at Wood’s Market
Early fall seems to be a good time to find Sunflowers in Door County. This is a field at the Wood Orchard Market in Egg Harbor. The market is busy with all kinds of home made food and other things.
Black-Eyed Susans
I live in St. Louis Missouri where the hot summers and humidity take a toll on plants. Traveling “Up North”: Northern Wisconsin, Door County and Northern Michigan, the grass turns greener and the flowers brighter. The cooler, moderate climate in these areas make everything come to life. These areas are full for flowers and everyContinue reading “Black-Eyed Susans”
Sunset on Lake Minocqua
The iconic boathouses of Lake Minocqua create the character of the area. The lake is well known for its sport fishing. Also, the lake surrounds the town of Minocqua making the boathouses a major source of activity. Photographing the boathouses is best done by boat but a lot of good scenes can be captured fromContinue reading “Sunset on Lake Minocqua”
Minocqua Trestle
One hot summer afternoon in 1954 I was bundled onto a waiting train in St. Louis’ iconic Union Station. By noon the next day I was crossing this trestle leading to Minoqua, Wisconsin’s station. This was the beginning of my love of this small town in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Minoqua is an Island City (town) surroundedContinue reading “Minocqua Trestle”
Stacked Rocks
This is part of the scenic Cave Point County Park. Exploring the shores of Door County (a peninsula) you find a lot of the stacked rocks you see on the beach. Cave Point is full of low bluffs and water swirling under the rock. The rock piles are called cairns. These have become more numerousContinue reading “Stacked Rocks”
Golden Hour on Lake Michigan
Sunrise on North Bay near Baileys Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin. This view always has spectacular colors but you have to get up early to see them. However, watching the full moon come over the horizon happens in early evening, a much better time.
Subtle tones
I really liked the soft tones of some photos I have seen and I have been looking for ways to accomplish the effect. What I found was that you really have to take these photos during the “Golden Hour.” That is, take your photos about 10 minutes before sunrise/sunset to 10 minutes after. The lightContinue reading “Subtle tones”
Fredrickson’s Bait Shop
Hidden on Star Lake is this little Bait Shop. Actually it is a little museum commemorating Edith and Hazel Fredrickson, two elderly sisters whom sat in their bait shop on the shore of this lake for over 70 years selling worms and minnows. These ladies were much celebrated as, year after year, hundreds upon hundredsContinue reading “Fredrickson’s Bait Shop”
